All About Orthodontics
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics, also referred to as dentofacial orthopedics, is the specialty field of dentistry focused on the treatment of dental and facial anomalies.
What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?
Orthodontic specialists have extensive and specialized training that enables them to provide their patients with professional, personalized treatments. They have completed at least two to three additional years of training in orthodontics.
Why should I visit an Orthodontist?
A certified specialist in orthodontics has undergone the extra training necessary to prevent, diagnose and treat irregularities in the alignment of the teeth and jaws. Orthodontists are experienced in using braces, Invisalign and other appliances to straighten the teeth and give you a healthy, stable bite. Great orthodontic treatment sets the stage for a lifetime of good oral health and relying on a specialist will help you achieve stunning, lasting results.
Why would someone need orthodontic treatment?
A malocclusion or “bad bite” makes patients more susceptible to tooth decay, difficulty chewing, bone loss and potential speech impairment. Orthodontics help correct these problems.
What causes orthodontic problems?
The majority of orthodontic problems are inherited. Some common orthodontic problems include:
- Crowding
- Spacing
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Extra or missing teeth
- Irregularities of the face
Accidents or trauma to the face or jaw are other factors that contribute to orthodontic problems, such as:
- Thumb or pacifier sucking
- Dental disease
- Premature loss of primary or permanent teeth
What’s the best age to visit the orthodontist?
The Canadian and American Associations of Orthodontists recommend an orthodontic screening at age 7. By this age, several permanent teeth in most children have erupted, allowing us to effectively evaluate your orthodontic condition. However, patients of any age can benefit from orthodontic treatment, including adults! One in every five orthodontic patients is over 21. You’re never too old to improve your smile!
When should my child first visit an Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children visit an orthodontist at the age of seven. This allows Dr. D’Aloisio to monitor the development of their teeth and jaws and tell you when it’s time to start treatment. If he notices any red flags, early intervention can make treatment much simpler and easier down the road and prevent the need for surgery or extractions.
How long will I have to wear my braces?
Treatment time obviously depends on each patient’s specific orthodontic problem. In general, treatment times range from 14 to 30 months. The “average” time frame a person is in braces is approximately 21 months.
If I have braces, do I still need dental checkups every six months?
Yes! Regular check-ups with your family dentist are important while in braces. Your family dentist will determine the intervals between cleaning appointments while you are in braces.
Why should I have my teeth straightened?
A beautiful smile will give you a major boost in confidence. However, the benefits go beyond your appearance and self-esteem.
- Straightening your teeth is important for:
- Creating easier access to brush and floss for improved oral hygiene
- Eliminating uneven wear and erosion of the enamel
- Stopping the grinding of teeth
- Improving the function and health of the teeth for better chewing and speaking
- Reducing the breakdown of the jaw bones to prevent tooth loss and pain
- Distributing the bite forces evenly to reduce TMJ pain, headaches and migraines
- Improving breathing and minimizing sleep apnea when combined with a surgical plan
- Creating symmetry in the facial structure
- Making room for implants in cases of missing teeth

Malocclusion is the fancy term for an improper bite due to dental or skeletal issues. Crossbites, overbites, underbites, crowding and spacing are all types of malocclusion. Dr. D’Aloisio is an expert at diagnosing your condition and devising the best treatment plan for your needs.
What happens if I put off a treatment?
While you’re never too old to perfect your smile, undergoing orthodontic treatment as a child or teen will help you achieve more dramatic results in less time. In some cases, putting off treatment could lead to the need for surgery or extractions.
