Bite Plane
Reducing Your Overbite
What is a Bite Plane?
A bite plane is a small, acrylic appliance connected to metal rings that fit comfortably around the top molar teeth. The acrylic sits on the inside of your teeth and provides you with an even biting surface while the appliance works to improve your overbite.
Why is it important to correct an overbite?
A deep overbite can cause various complications over time if left untreated. The constant contact of the lower teeth with the gum area behind the upper teeth ultimately can cause irritation, gum recession and eventually lead to damage to the roots of the upper teeth.
What Does A Bite Plane Do?
The bite plane is designed to correct a deep bite (when the upper front teeth come down too far over the lower front teeth). Its main function is to separate the back teeth and allow for extrusion of posterior teeth with the relative intrusion of anterior teeth.
What You Can Expect
Initially there may be an adjustment period and speech may be affected for a short period of time. The appliance prevents the back teeth from touching so you will need to use your front teeth for chewing. Speaking and swallowing will also improve in a few days. Your bite plane will be difficult at first, but works quickly and effectively if it is worn as directed by the orthodontist.
Depending on the amount of correction needed, the bite plane may be worn for 4 to 6 months.
